As part of the WWTF Call 2024 (Vienna Science, Research and Technology Fund), Vienna is emerging as an international center for research into post-acute infectious diseases such as Long COVID and ME/CFS. The focus is on seven innovative projects that are pursuing groundbreaking approaches to the treatment and prevention of such diseases.
The City of Vienna, led by Mayor Michael Ludwig, recognizes the urgency of intensifying research in this area, as more and more people suffer from the long-term effects of acute infections. Vienna is sending a strong signal by promoting interdisciplinary projects that aim to set new standards at the international level.
These seven projects cover a broad spectrum, ranging from the development of new therapeutic approaches and research into genetic and immunological factors to the improvement of diagnostic procedures. Each project brings together different teams of experts and combines findings from medicine, biotechnology, neurology, and other relevant fields of research. The aim is to develop practical solutions that directly contribute to improving the quality of life of those affected.
In close cooperation with leading medical institutions and our foundation, Vienna is to be established as a global research center in the field of post-acute infectious diseases. These projects not only give the participating research teams the opportunity to provide new impetus on the international stage, but also the chance to position Vienna as a pioneer in this important field of research.
Mayor Ludwig emphasizes the importance of this scientific commitment and highlights that the cooperation between the city, research institutions, and our foundation lays the foundation for future breakthroughs in the treatment of post-acute infectious diseases. Through this joint effort, Vienna will continue to be at the center of international research and provide significant impetus for public health.
On this page, we will regularly report on the progress of the funded projects and the insights gained from them.
